Being My Own Customer: Closet Overhaul At Home

When Matt and I first bought our dream home in Kirkwood 20 years ago, of course we did our closets first. Fast forward to 2020, and we still loved every spec of our custom closets, but I had my eye on some of our newest features, wood grains, and accessories, so we started on an update. I have to give my own creation a plug here by saying that custom closets truly make your space yours. With room for the items you have the most of, the closet not only saves on space but works functionally for your unique collection. Plus, it looks amazing and feels awesome to wake up every morning to an organized closet!  I also love the adjustability of our systems – holes every 32mm allowed me to adjust my shoe shelves to the exact right heights for my boots, tennis shoes, and flats.

Closets can often be a pain point in homes, where items go to hide and clutter is covered up. With an efficient system for organizing, a custom closet takes the stress out of “digging up” your treasures when you want to use them, giving your items a happy place to live and be displayed.

The result of our closet overhaul? WOW! I knew what Saint Louis Closet Co. did for me when we first moved in, and we’ve done it again – better the second time. I love our closet systems more than ever! Sometimes, being your own customer can teach you about your business from another point of view.  I love my installers, most of them have been with me for 15 years or more and having them in my home was so nice.  They are neat and tidy, clean up when they’re done, and are really great guys!

Another reason why I’m so passionate about custom closets is the way their reorganization forces the customer to reconcile with what they really need, and what can get rid. In my case, I donated over 50 pounds of clothing (!) and reunited with some old favorites that my teenage daughter wants to wear. Shedding these items and giving them a new life felt great.

Take a look at the finished product. For me, a fresh white laminate system with plenty of hanging space, enough room for all of my shoes, and some glass doors and drawers for folded items and purses. For Matt, our new Legno Espresso woodgrain with modern silver accents and basket and drawers for the essentials.
