Happy October! It’s one of the best times of year with the air as crisp as the apples. With the ‘stay-at-home’ order in place for most of the springtime, I want to help you take full advantage of these autumn days by sharing my favorite ways to get outside with your family. My advice? Enjoy it while you can! Fall only peaks for a few short weeks each year and there are so many fun, family-friendly activities to take part in. Create a fall bucket list and start crossing off your fall faves!
St. Louis offers the best of the best – check out my favorite fall activities you can do outdoors at a safe distance from others.
Apple Picking
One of the post popular activities that I see as I browse social media. It is the perfect time of year to take the family to an orchard like Eckert’s. With rows upon rows of trees, you can safely find delicious apples to pick and bring home to make all your favorite autumn recipes. Apple pie anyone?
Local Farmer’s Markets
I absolutely love the Kirkwood Farmer’s Market to shop for pumpkins and fall décor. It’s time to deck the fall!
Hiking
Hiking is a year-round activity you can enjoy, but there is no better time than smack in the middle of fall to go strolling through the woods. Fall offers the beautiful changing leaves and cloudy-autumn skies as a beautiful backdrop.
Try your luck at some of these local St. Louis trails and enjoy all that our local spots have to offer during this season!
Biking
Enjoy the outdoors while getting in some amazing exercise without the heat and humidity of summer blazing down on you. Biking through the fall landscape is a huge mood-booster and allows you to enjoy all those same fall views you would get hiking—just at a faster pace!
Camping
Whether you find a campground or take to your backyard—camping during the fall is always fun with a chill in the air. Camping brings more of the best fall activities together, too – s’mores, bonfires, scary stories, and the company of your friends and family.
Why is fall the perfect weather for camping? Your tent is less stuffy, mosquitos are gone for the season, and you can truly unplug from the digital world. It’s a win-win-win!
Corn Mazes
Are you up for the challenge? Corn mazes offer a full hour or more of fun as you use your map to navigate your way through acres of land. St. Louis offers a variety of local corn maze this fall at favorite locations such as Brookdale Farms, Broemmelsiek Park, and Eagle Fork Farms.
Movies Under the Stars
Set up a projector in your yard along the side of your house (or use a sheet!) and snuggle up with blankets, an air mattress or camping chairs to watch your favorite fall flicks outdoors. From horror movies to children’s classics, movies under the stars are a unique way to get the family together to enjoy the outdoors a little more.
Planting Mums
Green thumbs—its time to ditch your summer florals and grab your favorite color of mums! Planting mums is a timeless tradition during the fall, and I love seeing all the local porches decorated with the colors of autumn.
